Spelled "Peculier" with an "e" (A Peculier was a church official in charge of collecting taxes.) Expensive, but one of the best for sheer number of beers available. "Mobbed on week-ends" doesn't even begin to cover how wretched this NYU frat-boy place is, despite their excellent selection.

The Peculier Pub has a sort of double life that is, to say the least, a bit peculier.

On weekends, it is definitely not the place to go if you don't like crowds. This is especially the case when schools are in session, as a large part of the weekend crowd seems to come from NYU, although the bridge and tunnel crowd also add contribute their share to the crowd. Of course, even when it is crowded and noisy, it still has a beer list that is hard to match anywhere else, and if you are lucky enough to catch one of the waitresses or bartenders for a second when they can hear you, they will often be more than happy to reccomend a new beer to try.

When pushing your way through the weekend crowds, just remember, don't hold too much against the people who don't know any better than to buy round after round of (shudder) Coors Light. They're paying the same for that as they would for any of the Brooklyn Beers (and many of the other good microbrews) and are probably helping to keep the price down for the people at the next table drinking round after round of English and German beers that the Coors drinkers have probably never heard of.

If you don't like crowds, try coming to Peculier during the week. You can usually find a place to sit, and can actually chat with the waitresses and bartenders and get advice from them on the beers. Weekdays are when the staff really show their skill and love of beer. While on the weekends they are simply dishing out bottles and pints as fast as they can, the weekdays find the bartenders gravitating towards conversation with whoever is drinking the best beer.

On weekdays, if you ask for advice on selecting a beer (which can be a long and involved task with their extensive list), be ready to go into some detail as to what qualities you are looking for in your next drink. The staff members know their beer, and definitely enjoy using that knowledge and sharing it with people who appreciate it. They also aren't too bashful about complimenting patrons when they strongly approve of a beer selection.

On the whole, if you just want to go someplace to enjoy a good beer and maybe talk beer, then the weekday scene at the Peculier is worth a try. If you want a crowded place where you can impress college women by drinking beers whose name they can't pronounce, then you might want to try it on the weekend. Either way, you're sure to find at least a couple of beers that appeal to you.
